About Me: The Thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), also known as Tasmanian Tiger, Tassie Tiger, or Tasmanian Wolf, was a large carnivorous marsupial nativ
e to Australia. Outcompeted by dingos once the dogs arrived on the mainland, it survived on Tasmania until the arrival of Europeans.
Although unrelated to wolves or tigers, the thylacine occupied the same ecological niche of top predator and evolved many similar characteristics. It grew up to 130cm long, with a stiff, kangaroo-like tail extending 50-65cm behind. It was yellowish-brown in colour, with 16 to 18 dark stripes on its back and rump. It had a very wide gape and its marsupial pouch opened toward the rear.
The last confirmed sighting of a wild thylacine took place in 1932, while the final thylacine in captivity ('Benjamin' of Hobart Zoo) died on September 7, 1936........
Saddly we now face losing our Tasmanian Devil to a terrible facial tumor cancer, many have died.I only hope they find a cure, before they are gone like the Tasmanian Tiger
