One of the best things about America is the fundamental tenet of our system of law: A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. That s a powerful and far-reaching assumption, one that sets us apart and maybe above most of the rest of the world. Sadly, the same is not true of the more plebian Court of Public Opinion. Thanks to the beauty of the Internet and I m not looking a gift horse in the mouth here, people can be tried and found guilty in the public s eye almost immediately and with little, if any, evidence of real substance. Opinions are formed in a nanosecond and clung to like a pit bull with a bone these days, facts be damned.
