Part 1 of "Once Upon a Dream"
Once upon a time, there was a man named Martin, who had a dream. Martin dreamed of a world in which all people would live together in peace, harmony and love. He dreamed that people of all different races and religious backgrounds, could come together as one, under God, to do His will, which was to love one another as He loved us. Although Martin s dream was shared by many, it was not shared by all. There were those who mocked him and tried to destroy his dream through acts of violence and oppression, hatred and fear, but as each night unfolded, Martin kept on dreaming and as each day passed, he worked even harder to fulfill his dream. He preached about God s love and how good always triumphs over evil. He marched through cities and towns with others who believed in his dream, to teach all who would boldly listen that we should all seek God s truth and light and to see each other as He sees us, as brothers and sisters, all equal in the eyes of our Lord. He spoke of hope, equality and justice for all. He touched the hearts of many when he said one day, I want my 4 little children to be judged, not by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character . Martin was a great man of wisdom, love, hope and understanding. He knew of God s love and he wanted to teach others of that love and how it could be used to better the lives of all men and remove the hatred from their hearts. To achieve his dream, Martin had to face unimaginable adversity from those who feared God s love, yet Martin, despite all challenges and obstacles, remained committed to his dream and continued to march boldly, speak freely, love openly and teach honestly about God s love and the dream that he held so dear, for the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of and for all men. Then one night, Martin's voice became silent. A solitary shot rang out in the Memphis sky and on the evening of April 4, 1968, his lone figure fell to the ground, never to stand again. |

2nd Part of "Once Upon a Dream"
Even though he would never stand again after that night, he arose. He arose to glory in the house of the Lord. He arose to become a hero to all who held the love of a powerful God in their hearts and the hopes and dreams of brotherhood and sisterhood in their moral souls. He arose to the greatness of all those who had gone before him and had struggled to overcome the fear and hatred in men s hearts and he arose to become one of the most prominent civil rights leaders in the free world, even though he would never live to see that freedom come to pass and as I watched the historical inauguration of another man named Barack Obama, who had a dream to become the 44th President of the United States of America on my television, on the cold, winter day of January 20, 2009, I couldn t help but wonder if Martin arose from his seat in Heaven and with a tear in his eye, hand over heart, applauded the long awaited realization of his dream, that all men ARE created equal and all God's children WILL be judged by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin. |
