Offline Outings: Things to do in Alexandria, Egypt
Connecting online has never been easier. Sometimes, however, people like to meet face to face to connect further. This series explores ways to take your online relationships, either platonic or romantic, into the real world, with suggestions for exciting and free things to do on a meetup with a Pal. As always, never walk into a situation in which you feel unsafe. Be smart, trust your best judgement, and have fun!
Our first featured city is Alexandria, Egypt. Known in ancient times for its wondrous lighthouse and library, the modern Alexandria combines old-world charm and adventure with all that a major port and Mediterranean beach town has to offer. If you're looking for some free and fun things to do with a new Pal or budding love in Alexandria, here are some ideas:
Although the original Library of Alexandria was lost to history in the 3rd Century, we recommend taking some time to peruse its present-day replacement. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a massive 11-story building housing a planetarium, multiple museums, a conference center and diverse learning facilities, not to mention millions of books. It’s a great place to explore inside and out, whether you’re looking for a quiet place to read together or you want to take in a lecture or performance. You can even take a two hour guided tour in one of three languages!
From the library, you and your companion might choose to walk along the Corniche, a waterfront promenade spanning much of the Eastern Harbor. With wonderful views of the sea, as well as plentiful opportunities for dining and shopping, the Corniche is the perfect place to spend an afternoon getting to know one another. Don't forget to walk over Stanley Bridge, the perfect place for a photo op.
If you’re in the mood for something more old school, where “just browsing” reaches a whole new level, take a walk through the souq district, a bustling open air marketplace yielding any goods imaginable to the dedicated seeker. Whether you want to buy something special for your Pal or just enjoy the menagerie of colors, smells, and sounds, this web of streets will not disappoint. We’ve heard it’s especially magnificent at night.
This series will feature some of our biggest cities, in alphabetical order.
